Housing & Infrastructure Policy

Australian infrastructure is failing. We are experiencing a housing crisis. Young people cannot afford to buy their first home amid rising house prices. The ‘solutions’ proposed by the major parties, and indeed minor parties like the Greens and One Nation, amount either to minor tweaks which will change nothing, or scapegoating narratives against immigrant communities which will also change nothing. The problem is land speculation and private ownership of critical Australian infrastructure.

Reverse the Neoliberal Sell-off

The privatisation of critical state-owned enterprises and critical infrastructure for dirt cheap during the neoliberal turn under the Keating Labor government and the Howard Coalition government was a travesty which effectively stole wealth and critical infrastructure from the Australian people. These companies include the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Telstra, Qantas, and Optus (now under foreign ownership), though also countless more enterprises and critical infrastructure privatised at the federal and state levels.

The Eureka Party supports the full socialisation of all enterprises and critical infrastructure that were privatised during the neoliberal turn, including but not limited to ports, roads, bridges, railways, electricity networks, telecommunications, and water systems, to bring control of our infrastructure back into public hands.

Fix and Develop our Infrastructure

The Eureka Party supports an immediate mobilisation to restore and develop our failing critical civil infrastructure to meet the needs of Australians.

Telecommunications Fusion and Sovereign Satellite Internet

The Eureka Party supports the fusion of NBN Co., Telstra and Optus into a single Australian Telecommunications Corporation, with the satellite expertise of Optus put to use for the creation and deployment of a publicly-owned, privacy-first satellite internet network.

Introduction of a Land Value Tax (LVT)

The Eureka Party supports the nationwide introduction of a Land Value Tax (LVT) on 100% of the unimproved value of land (not including buildings, improvements or labour) to make land speculation completely unprofitable.

The Eureka Party supports the introduction of targeted LVT subsidies for vulnerable workers, farmers, retirees and people with disabilities, to ensure that vulnerable owner-occupiers do not lose their homes due to an inability to pay the full LVT.

National Construction Code (NCC) Reform

The Eureka Party supports reforming the National Construction Code (NCC) to reduce barriers to the construction of new homes en masse using earthen methods such as adobe and rammed earth, as well as hemp-based methods like hempcrete, to reduce the cost of new housing builds and promote more sustainable and long-lasting construction methods, particularly in remote, rural and regional areas.
